October 12, 2007 CONFERENCE
STC’s Region 4 Conference, “The Crucial Communicator,” will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn and Gateway Conference Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Sessions will feature presentations and discussions on how technical communicators can more effectively demonstrate their indispensability in the workplace. Melvin Smith—an assistant professor in the department of organizational behavior and a faculty director of executive education at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio—will deliver the keynote address on the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace and in social settings, and demonstrate its potential to benefit organizations. Neil Perlin, Scott Abel, and STC Executive Director Susan Burton will also present sessions. Session topics include Web 2.0, structured authoring, Captivate for e-learning, DITA, integrated authoring and translation, international documentation standards, and XML solutions. The ISO JTC 1 SC7/WG2 group—comprising international experts in standards and user documentation from the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States—will be in attendance. October 25–27, 2007 CONFERENCE
The India Chapter STC will hold its annual conference—the biggest annual learning, sharing, and networking forum for technical communication professionals in the subcontinent—at Cidade de Goa in Goa, India. November 10–11, 2007 WORKSHOP
The U.K. Chapter STC will hold a workshop on making the most of DITA at the Novotel Hotel, Manchester Centre in Manchester, England. Alan Houser, principal of Group Wellesley consultants, will be one of the workshop leaders. Workshop and training topics will include making DITA work for your data, working with DITA and FrameMaker for authoring and publishing, and XMetaL and the DITA open toolkit. March 14, 2008 CONFERENCE
The France Chapter STC will host its annual conference in Paris, France. This year’s theme is “Communicating Europe.” The conference will celebrate the diversity of technical communication in Europe. The Rochester Chapter STC will hold “Spectrum 2008” at the R.I.T. Inn and Conference Center in Rochester, New York. Ginny Redish, a usability consultant for Redish & Associates, Inc., who founded the Document Design Center for the American Institutes for Research in 1979, will serve as keynote speaker. April 16–18, 2008 CONFERENCE
The TransAlpine Chapter STC—representing Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland—will hold its 2008 conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The event kicks off with a one-day workshop on Wednesday, April 16, followed by the two-day conference on Thursday and Friday, April 17–18.
